Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee Announces Re-Organization
Plan Will Enhance Clubs’ Viability
NASHVILLE – The Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee is announcing a reorganization plan that ensures the agency is positioned most strongly to carry out its mission to serve at-risk youth in the Nashville area. The Club’s Board of Directors and leadership team set forth a goal in early fall to evaluate Club operations and longer-term goals for the purpose of improving efficiency and overall impact of programs.
“The changes we are making were driven initially with a goal to improve business operations, but given the dramatic challenges impacting all organizations in this very rough economy, we were especially motivated to reduce costs to remain viable. These changes will ensure that we continue to meet our mission of serving children and maintain a strong and sustainable organization,” said Brian Shipp, BGCMT Board Chairman. “By taking these steps our organization can cut costs by nearly 50 percent and be in a position to serve even more children.”
The following re-organizational changes are being made by BGCMT:
- Implementation of three unique service models that include:
- A traditional “Club House” model at the Andrew Jackson Club in North Nashville.
- A “school-based” model as illustrated by the Thompson Lane programs that are delivered at Antioch Middle School.
- A “partnership” model as illustrated with the Preston Taylor Club that is managed in partnership with the YMCA.
- Additionally, BGCMT is taking the following strategic steps in overall re-organization:
- The Vine Hill Club will be closed over the next month and Club members will be transitioned to Andrew Jackson and Thompson Lane (Antioch Middle School) programs, or to an alternate area program. BGCMT staff has met with families and will be working closely to ensure a smooth transition.
- An overall staff reduction that saves 40 percent annually and an additional 40 percent reduction in non-personnel costs.
Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee will continue to maintain five sites in Davidson and Williamson counties, serving about 350 kids per day after school and many more in the summer months. The Franklin and Fairview Clubs in Williamson County will continue to operate in their current program format.
Staff and board leadership have been meeting with parents and guardians of youth members to share details on the reorganization.
This restructuring will produce a more accessible and efficient model through which services can be delivered. Other features of the re-organization include:
- Establishing membership targets and caps for each Club based on historic attendance levels. This will enable management to establish staffing and predictable expense models for each Club going forward.
- Staffing models and ratios based on the national Boys & Girls Clubs’ standards and guidelines.
- An overall operations costs reduction of nearly 50 percent, and the ability to serve even more children; and through partnerships serve them at a lower cost.
Duane Hinshaw, Senior Regional Services Director for Boys & Girls Clubs of America, said the organization’s local programs, like other non-profits, are experiencing these same challenges nationwide.
“Financial uncertainty and a diminishing pool of resources are often creating operating challenges for local Clubs and very tough decisions are being made by local leadership in regards to operating hours, staffing, and in certain cases the consolidating or closing of Club sites,” Hinshaw said.
“At Boys & Girls Clubs of America we are working with local staff and board leadership to work through this critical balance between increasing demand for services and diminishing resources. We have great confidence in the leadership of the Boys & Girls Clubs of Middle Tennessee, as they position the organization in a manner that serves the best interest of children in the Nashville area for many years to come.”
